BREMCO Annual Membership Meeting June 13

On Saturday, June 13, Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corp (BREMCO) will host its Annual Membership meeting. According to Brian Crutchfield, director of economic development for BREMCO, it’s less of a meeting and more of an event.

The event kicks off at 8:00 a.m. at Ashe County High School. There is no cost for attending. Every registered member in attendance will be given a gift of one eco-friendly GreenSmart tote bag filled with three Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) light bulbs—one 13 watt, one 18 watt and one 23 watt.

Registered members could possibly receive more than that as well. Those who show up are automatically entered into a drawing for various prizes. There is a 32-inch HDTV and a portable DVD player up for grabs for each district represented by BREMCO and even more prizes are available.

Also, the first 50 registered members to RSVP by email to kford@BlueRidgeEMC.com will receive a free Energy Efficient Kit valued at $35. Include in the email your name and address, along with a brief description of what you’re most interested in learning about so that you can be more energy efficient. The kit includes items such as a refrigerator thermometer that will let you know when it’s too cool in your fridge, a hot water gauge that will tell you when it’s running too hot and even some caulking and weather-stripping to help you seal your house up tight.

The day will start off with a special seminar, led by Crutchfield, on making your house more energy efficient. He will introduce interested locals to the top 10 ways to cut energy costs.

“Our plan is, in the future, to take this workshop on the road,” said Crutchfield.

The seminar, as well as the giving away of the CFL bulbs and Energy Efficiency Kits is part of BREMCO’s effort to incorporate it’s GreenSmart program into the meeting. GreenSmart is the company’s sustainable solutions program As required by the state, BREMCO must obtain 10 percent of its energy needs through renewable energy resources or energy efficiency measures and GreenSmart is the main way in which they are achieving this standard.

Following the seminar, the business portion of the meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. First on the agenda will be the election of nominees for BREMCO’s board of directors. Nominees for this year are: Joy Coffey, Watauga District, Kenneth Greene, Ashe District, Charity Gambill-Gwyn, director-at-large, and Jimmy D Hemphill, Caldwell District.

According to Crutchfield, members will have the chance during this portion of the meeting to voice issues that they wish to be addressed by BREMCO board members. Not everyone always does, but Crutchfield mentioned one instance a couple of years ago when a gentleman had an issue with BREMCO’s removal of personal energy use graphs from their bills that they mailed to members. He said that it was a very convenient feature and wished that they had left it on there. Many members agreed heartily and Crutchfield said that a couple of months later the graph was on the bills again.

At 11:00 a.m. the prize drawing begins.

Also at the meeting there will be a Health Fair with free screenings sponsored by Ashe Memorial Hospital, a special children’s program with childcare, live entertainment, various energy exhibits and plenty of coffee and biscuits.
