This Week in Free Music
There are still only a couple of free concerts taking place each week, but don’t despair live music fans. By the end of this month, there will be more shows taking place every week than you can shake a stick at. Take advantage of the still relatively cool weather and go support live music this weekend!

6/5 Lazybirds/Crys Matthews
Boone’s Lazybirds are a High Country musical institution. With an endorsement on their website from none other than Doc Watson himself, the Lazybirds have long been the area’s premier purveyors of ragtime blues, roots country and early jazz. Following their performance at the Jones House, the Lazybirds will move the party down the street for an evening show at Boone Saloon.
Warming up the Jones House porch for the Lazybirds will be local singer-songwriter Crys Matthews. No stranger to Jones House audiences, Matthews’ emotive style of soul-infused folk has drawn comparisons to Tracy Chapman and Jill Scott.
The 2009 Concerts on the Lawn series is sponsored by Alpine Storage, Downtown Boone Development Association and Mast General Store. This Friday’s show is sponsored by Boone Bagelry.
Valle Crucis

6/5 Upright & Breathin’
Local bluegrass band Upright & Breathin’ will take the stage at this Friday’s edition of Music in the Valle. Comprised of guitarist/bassist Ben Smith, banjo player Brian Kreher, mandolin player Jeff Moretz and bassist/guitarist John Shefield, Upright & Breathin’ has honed their bluegrass chops through numerous performances on the back deck at Murphy’s. During the last year, the band has played virtually every venue in Boone and Blowing Rock.
