Benefit For Lazybirds’ Andy Christopher at Dragonfly Theater June 20
Bill Includes Lost Ridge Band, Upright & Breathin’
On Saturday, June 20, the Lazybirds, along with bluegrass bands the Lost Ridge Band and Upright & Breathin’, will take the stage at the Dragonfly Theater & Pub for a benefit concert in support of Lazybirds founding member Andy Christopher.
On Saturday, June 20, the Boone musical community will come together in support of one of its own as the Lazybirds, the Lost Ridge Band and Upright & Breathin’ will perform a benefit concert at the Dragonfly Theater & Pub to raise funds for Lazybirds tenor guitarist and tenor banjo player Andy Christopher. The show will start at 9:30 p.m.
Since early April, Christopher has been receiving considerable medical treatment for a serious heart condition. In addition to sidelining him performing alongside his longtime bandmates, Christopher’s condition and prolonged hospital stays have resulted in mounting medical expenses.
According to bandmate and friend Mitch Johnson, he and the other Lazybirds have been operating in missing man formation during recent shows and are anxious for Christopher to be back in the fold. The band has been donating a portion of the proceeds from each of their shows to defray Christopher’s bills since his illness began.
“We’ve just been trying to do the best we can without him,” said Johnston. “It’s painful. This is our 13th year and you know. It’s just difficult. That’s all we’ve known as a group.
“He’s a brother of ours. We’ve known him longer than we’ve played with him. He was my roommate for about six years before we all settled down and got married.”
Since the late 1990s, the Lazybirds have been one of the High Country’s most renowned roots groups. While bluegrass and old-time remain the region’s calling card, the Lazybirds have proven adept at incorporating elements of each into their blend of blues, ragtime, jazz, folk, country and early rock. Last Friday, the band performed at the Jones House, followed by a show at Boone Saloon.
