High Country Jubilee Chorus Performs June 19 and 20
The High Country Jubilee Chorus performs selections from The Sound of Music in Banner Elk and Boone on Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20, at 7:30 p.m. each night.
The familiar melodies of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved musical The Sound of Music will be performed as part of the 13th annual High Country Jubilee Chorus. The Watauga County Arts Council, in cooperation with the North Carolina Arts Council and the Avery County Arts Council, sponsors the chorus, comprised of community members from Watauga and Avery counties.
The Jubilee Chorus will perform for the public on Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20, in Banner Elk and Boone, respectively, at 7:30 p.m. each night. The Friday concert takes place at the Banner Elk Presbyterian Church fellowship hall, and adult admission is $7. On Saturday, the concert is at Rosen Concert Hall on the ASU campus in Boone; admission is $10. Students and children are admitted free to both performances.
This year’s chorus director is Ruth Bullock, a veteran vocal tutor in the High Country. Bullock has undergraduate and graduate degrees in vocal performance and music education from the School of Music at ASU. She has experience teaching in the public schools and has performed professionally.
“She’s enjoying her move back into directing again,” said Roland Moy, coordinator of the Jubilee Chorus.
Bill Winkler, recently retired from the position of Watauga High School band director and the current director of the Watauga Community Band, is serving as assistant director. Matt Snow is the accompanist.
The choir of about 25 people, ranging in age from elementary school to retirees, will sing various selections during the first half of the concert, including “This Is My Country,” “Autumn Leaves” by Johnny Mercer, The Beatles’ “Yesterday,” “Wayfarin’ Stranger” and “When the Saints Go Marching In,” arranged by John Rutter.
During the mid-point of the concert, David Brown will present several solo selections. Brown has enjoyed a number of years as a big band vocalist, as well as years of experience as a lead singer in barbershop quartets.
In the second half of the concert, the chorus will return to perform selections from The Sound of Music—some as solos, some by small ensembles and some by the entire group. The songs include the popular favorites “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Me” and “Climb Every Mountain.”
Proceeds from the Jubilee Chorus concerts benefit music programs and scholarships.
