Mountain Home Music Presents Josh Goforth and Laura Boosinger Saturday
Banjo player and singer Laura Boosinger performs with multi-instrumentalist Josh Goforth as part of the Mountain Home Music series on Saturday, June 13, at 8:00 p.m. at the Blowing Rock School auditorium.
Josh Goforth and Laura Boosinger are not household names—unless you’re interested in the traditional music of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In this world, they are very well known. Together, they represent the rising star and the seasoned veteran.
Mountain Home Music presents Boosinger and Goforth in concert this Saturday, June 13, at 8:00 p.m. at the Blowing Rock School auditorium.
Still in his 20s, Goforth has already achieved what many only dream of. He grew up at the knee of some of Madison County’s finest ballad singers and instrumentalists. He quickly learned the ballad form and mastered the guitar, banjo, mandolin and fiddle; he soon became someone others wanted to hear—across the nation and around the world. He has appeared at Lincoln Center, Gstaad Country Nights Festival in Switzerland and the Austrian Alps Performing Arts Festival. He has toured in Ireland and Scotland and performed at many festivals and concerts around the world. He also appeared in the Tri-mark Feature Film Songcatcher as Fiddlin’ Will, and he contributed several fiddle pieces to the soundtrack. In the years 2000 and 2003, he was named Fiddler of the Festival at the nationally acclaimed Fiddler’s Grove competition. One could say he’s off to a pretty good start.
Boosinger’s concert performances and recordings have earned her a well-deserved reputation as one of North Carolina’s most talented singers and interpreters of the music of the Southern Appalachians. As a singer, she is steeped in the tradition of ballads and shape-note hymns. She has five CDs to her credit, including her latest, Most of All, with Josh Goforth. As an instrumentalist, her primary instrument is the banjo. She began her study of banjo as a college student in western North Carolina. In the mid-1980s, she became a member of one of western North Carolina’s leading bands, The Luke Smathers Band, and played their style of mountain swing for the next 13 years. In addition to the banjo, she plays Appalachian dulcimer and finger-style autoharp. Boosinger performs solo, with Goforth, and also with David Holt and his band The Lightning Bolts.
