Watauga Humane Society Groundbreaking Saturday
The new 16,000-square-foot Irma Baker Lyons Animal Adoption Center will be located off Don Hayes Road, just past the Rutherwood Baptist Church off Old Highway 421.
Bring a shovel and come help the Watauga Humane Society Board of Directors, staff, supporters and four-legged friends break ground at the site of the new Irma Baker Lyons Animal Adoption Center at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 13.
The 16,000-plus square-foot LEED-certified center is slated to open in fall 2010.
Some of the features of the new adoption center and complex include: state-of-the-art kennels; outside areas for play and behavioral training; a community room for behavioral training classes; children’s programs, meetings and conferences; a gift shop; a medical and surgical unit; quarantine areas; administration office space and storage; memorial gardens; and walking paths.
A group photo opportunity is planned to symbolize all of the contributions of so many people who helped to raise the initial funds for the center. These contributions allowed the Watauga Humane Society to purchase 14 acres of land off Don Hayes Road and add improvements to the land, including the almost three-acre Dog Park.
Architectural plans from the Walter, Robbs, Callahan and Pierce firm will be on display during the groundbreaking, and the ceremony will serve to launch the public portion of the capital campaign.
“We have some sections of the building that have yet to be reserved for naming rights,” said Janet P. Pepin, executive director of the Watauga Humane Society. “I will be happy to review these with whoever wishes to honor or memorialize someone they love or be recognized for his or her gift.”
The Watauga Humane Society provided shelter, food and medical care to more than 1,000 animals last year. The new adoption center site is located off Don Hayes Road, just past the Rutherwood Baptist Church off Old Highway 421.
