Hardin Park Students Shine in Math Competitions
Six Hardin Park “Mathletes” won national awards for excellence within the Math Olympiad Elementary Division for students in grades 4 through 6. Fifth grader Simon Marland won the Math Olympiad silver pin, which is awarded to those scoring in the top 10 percent of students in the nation. An embroidered patch is awarded to those in the top 50 percent of the nationwide participants, and receiving this honor were sixth grader Merton Chen and fifth graders MJ Sanqui, Maddy Allain, Harrison Brown and Matthew Hellenbrand. The highest scoring fourth grader was Lynne Chen.
Hardin Park’s contingent of 16 students was among the nearly 150,000 students worldwide to participate in the 2008-09 Math Olympiad program. They participated in a series of five contests from November 2008 to March 2009.
A group of five third graders participated in the Continental Mathematics League contest program. Sam Taubman was the highest scorer from Hardin Park and received the CML gold medal.
Participants in both the Math Olympiad and CML competitions attended weekly practice sessions of the Hardin Park Math Club after school under the supervision and coaching of parent volunteers Eric and Kimberly Marland.
