Introduce your child to the joy of fishing at the annual Kiddo Fishing Derby at Beech Mountain, taking place this year on Saturday, June 27. From 9:00 a.m. to noon, girls and boys ages 4 to 12 will take to the banks of Coffey Lake in hopes of reeling in a trophy-winning trout.
Admission to the Kiddo Fishing Derby is free of charge, and the Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event. Hot dogs and soda will be sold at the event.
Registration for the derby begins at 8:00 a.m. at Coffey Lake, which has already been stocked this year, said Peggy Coscia, office manager at the Beech Mountain Chamber. A limit of four fish can be caught per child, and the kids are free to take home what they catch—the event volunteers will even put the fish on ice for you!
“We put it in ice and they can take it home and cook it that night for dinner,” Coscia said.
Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the first trout caught, the largest trout, the heaviest trout and the first child to reach the four-fish limit in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions. All children participating will also take home a gift.
“Everybody goes home with something,” Coscia said.
The chamber recommends that participants bring their own fishing rods and bait, but they’ll also have a few extra rods if someone needs one.
To get to Coffey Lake, drive past Ski Beech resort on the Beech Mountain Parkway and take a right on Lake Road. Look for directional signs. For more information, contact the Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce at 828-387-9283.
