Local Youth Track Club Performs Well at Meet
Tailwind Track Club, a local youth club for children interested in track and field, finished its first of two meets on May 23.
Twenty-six children from the club, whose membership is around 75, traveled to Ronald Reagan High School in Pfafftown for the 6th annual Johnson-Riley Track Challenge.
“Everybody did great,” said Head Coach Don Wood. “It’s pretty tough for a 9 or 10 year old to sit and wait for their event and then to get up and compete, but these kids did really well.”
Out of the nearly 1100 kids at the Track Challenge, Tailwind’s club members performed among some of the best, with numerous top-ten finishes and even a first place in the triple jump from Kory Phillips with a 24-foot, 2-inch jump.
Another standout performance came from the Youth Girls team, consisting of Madi Casey, Rebecca Hayes, Alison Seramur and Sydney Wiswell, who also did well in the triple jump and high jump, taking top spots in both events.
“This was the first time that any of these kids competed in the triple jump and they only had a month to prepare. They did excellent,” said Wood.
The Youth Girls team also succeeded in placing fifth overall in the team competition. Twenty teams competed in the event.
Corey West and Joe Wiswell both competed in different divisions of the 1500-meter run. West was second in the Bantam 1500 with a time of 5:52 and Wiswell finished seventh in the Midget 1500 with a time of 6:08.
“Corey lit up. He was not happy with his performance in the 400 and came back and took second in the 1500. I was impressed with how he competed,” said Wood.
Tailwind Track Club heads to Mallard Creek High School this weekend, June 13 and 14, to compete in the North Carolina AAU State Meet. The club will take 20 kids from the previous competition.
“I’m looking forward to seeing that competitive spirit come out again,” said Wood. “It’s great to watch the kids succeed like this.”
