Ged Moody Named ASU Sustainability Director
Ged Moody has been named university sustainability director at ASU. He will be responsible for coordinating the university’s progress toward the goal of being a world leader in sustainability. He begins his duties July 1.
The position was established as part of ASU’s strategic focus on promoting and modeling sustainability and alternative energy projects that are supported by the university’s Sustainability Council.
“Sustainability is a strategic direction of Appalachian’s and is supported by the administration, faculty, students and staff. Ged will coordinate the university’s progress toward the goal of being a world leader in sustainability, create a campus sustainability plan, implement new programs and communicate sustainable practices with students, faculty and staff,” said Greg Lovins, interim vice chancellor for business affairs.
“Given today’s economic and environmental realities, Appalachian has a tremendous opportunity to leverage its decades of leadership in the field of sustainability,” Moody said. “I want to create an environment that will educate every student at Appalachian about the virtues and methods of sustainability, and by doing so, position them to be the green leaders that our future demands. I also plan to promote a socially responsible view of sustainability that includes everything from renewable energy and thoughtful resource consumption to alternative transportation and local food.”
Moody earned a master’s degree from ASU in appropriate technology in 2008. During 2009, he was an entrepreneur-in-residence in ASU’s Walker College of Business where he taught entrepreneurship fulltime while working to promote green business activities for the university and the region. In addition, he has worked with nonprofit and community-based efforts to develop and promote various sustainability and green initiatives in the High Country community.
A native of Blacksburg, Va., Moody spent 15 years in Charlotte working in the consulting, health care and information technology industries. More recently, he has helped local businesses with their sustainability efforts and worked to develop renewable energy projects.
Moody has a bachelor’s degree in economics and computer science from the University of South Carolina. He also studied management at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
While a student at ASU, Moody was a member of the university’s Sustainability Council and UNC-Tomorrow’s Sustainability Committee. He also chaired ASU’s student-funded Renewable Energy Initiative.
