The Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame opened its doors in Wilkesboro in 2008; its mission is to showcase and preserve the rich musical heritage of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Among the initial class of inductees were Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, the Original Carter Family, Dolly Patron—and David Johnson, a gifted studio musician who plays to make others sound good on recorded music.
Johnson was born in Wilkes County and began his career playing banjo with his father and grandfather in Purlear. Johnson’s talent for playing numerous instruments makes him one of the busiest session artists in North Carolina and allows him to travel nationwide. Johnson is considered by all to be a gifted artist and local treasure.
The recently inducted 2009 class included folks such as Ralph and Carter Stanley, Ola Belle Reed, Arthur Smith, Mike Seeger—and Eric Ellis, a gifted Wilkes County bluegrass banjo player.
Ellis plays with such top performers as Tony and Wyatt Rice, Jimmy Gaudreau and is a regular on the WKBC & Minton Pawn Shop Hometown Opry. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the category of sideman and regional musician.
Dave Haney was a guitarist and lead singer with Boston's Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass Boys. Billy Gee is a former bassist for The Country Gentleman and The Circuit Riders, and David Wiseman currently plays mandolin and fiddle with The Linville Ridge Band.
Mountain Home Music is a concert series dedicated to honoring the music and musicians of the Appalachian Region. Concerts take place at the Blowing Rock School auditorium.
