54th Annual Farm City Awards Celebration Seeks Nominations
On Saturday, August 15, the Farm City Banquet will celebrate 54 years of recognizing those individuals and groups who do their best to make Watauga County a healthier place to live.
The event will kick off at 2:00 p.m. with free fun-on-the-farm activities at the historic Blair Farm, located at 113 Blairmont Drive off of Deerfield Road in Boone.
At 4:00 p.m. the awards ceremony begins, and the Farm City Committee is now accepting nominations for the numerous awards that they hand out each year. This year the purpose of the awards is to recognize people contributing to “Growing Healthy Communities.” If you wish to nominate someone, download your application from watauga.ces.ncsu.edu and mail it in to 971 West King Street or email it to kathy_lee@ncsu.edu. Nominations are due by Friday, July 10.
At 5:00 p.m. on the day of the festival, a dinner will be served featuring barbeque made from local pork. Tickets will be required for the dinner and are available by calling the Watauga Cooperative Extension office at 828-264-3061.
Categories for which you can nominate someone this year include:
Friend of Agriculture: Individual or business that has made significant contributions (financial or otherwise) to local agriculture through farming, horticulture, nurseries, gardening.
Woman in Agriculture: Woman who has made significant contributions (financial or otherwise) to local agriculture.
Youth in Agriculture: Youth who has made significant contributions (financial or otherwise) to local agriculture.
Urban Gardening Award: Individual or business that has made significant contributions to edible landscapes, gardening/producing food in the city.
Agri-tourism Award: In honor of Pauline and Constantine Alimanestiano. Agri-tourism is tourism based on attracting visitors to farm operations such as pick-your-own, wineries, Christmas tree farms, herb farms, greenhouses and farm stands.
Youth Volunteer Award: Youth who has exemplified the spirit of volunteering in the community.
Adult Volunteer Award: Adult who has exemplified the spirit of volunteerism in the community.
Farm and Food Steward Award: This award is given by the High Country Chapter of the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association to an individual or organization in recognition of their contributions to maintaining Southern Appalachia’s tradition of food independence and to building a local food system through economic, environmental and socially-sustainable agricultural practices.
Active at Work Award: For a company or employee that does a great job in promoting physical activity and a healthy workplace. Sponsored by the Be Active Appalachian Partnership.
L.E. Tuckwiller Award: Recognizing a town or community for the outstanding efforts in “community development.” Sponsored by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce.
Growing Healthy Communities Award: Individual, organization, or business helping grow healthy communities.
