Not Dreadfully Awful Music
Peewee Moore & The Awful Dreadful Snakes Return to Boone Saloon Saturday
Chattanooga honky tonk trio Peewee Moore & The Awful Dreadful Snakes will return to Boone Saloon this Saturday, June 27.
Take a cursory glance at the song titles listed on Peewee Moore & The Awful Dreadful Snakes’ MySpace site and before you’ve heard a single note, you can tell you’re about to hear something Southern and raw. Titles like “The Leaving Side Of Gone,” “Whiskey Fuels The Flame,” “Truck Driving Song” and “Ain’t Got Nothin’” read like songs from a country star’s greatest hits. And that’s fine with Moore.
This Saturday, June 27, Moore & The Awful Dreadful Snakes will return to Boone Saloon. The show will start at 10:30 p.m.
Born and raised just outside Chattanooga, Tenn. in northern Georgia, Moore has the sounds of Cash, Willie and Waylon and the boys in his blood.
“I come from a musical family and grew up with the whole outlaw country and some of the rockabilly stuff,” said Moore. “My mom, brother and grandfather played music and had bands. I guess it kind of got stuck in my head.”
Moore cut his teeth on the road for six years with his former band the Tennessee Rounders. The sextet made a couple of records and played hundreds of live shows, allowing Moore to learn the tools of the trade before calling it quits.
“[The Tennessee Rounders] pretty much toured regionally,” Moore said of the band. “We sold 10,000 copies of two records. I think some of the guys got tired of traveling around and got ready to settle down. It happens in this business.”
Instead of following his bandmates to perhaps calmer pastures, Moore decided to slim down to a trio and do what he does best: play rocking country music. Moore recruited a rhythm section and formed the Awful Dreadful Snakes in October 2007. Named for a favorite Appalachian ballad, Moore and company cut a new CD full of his rough hewn, twang-filled trucker tales of heartache, highways and honky tonks.
“It’s a lot easier to deal with, but the sound…we’ve got a certain way to make gel together that makes it sound just right,” said Moore.
Thanks to a seemingly never-ending string of one-nighters, Moore and The Awful Dreadful Snakes’ big-hearted country music has been catching on with fans from Tennessee to Texas and beyond.
“We’re just trying to stay busy, get as many shows as we can and get in front of as many people as we can,” Moore said. “This year’s the hardest we’ve done so far. Everything’s going pretty great. I couldn’t ask for anything better. The word’s traveling pretty quick and I’m pretty happy about it.”
Although a number of musicians have already filed through the ranks of the band, Moore has soldiered on, continuing to play with whoever will join him on the road.
“It’s hard to find musicians that want to work that hard,” said Moore. “Especially drummers.”
Working hard is just what Moore and company do on stage. While their recordings suggest a laid back stone country outfit, Moore insists the band’s live energy is far above and beyond what comes across on their recorded output.
“The live show is just a ton more energy than the record. We try to keep everybody jumping around a lot,” Moore said.
Nevertheless, Moore and the boys are still cranking out new songs and will release a new record on July 8 and are contemplating a live release by summer’s end.
