This Week in Free Music

The last weekend in June is full of stellar offerings of the free music variety as several of the High Country’s most established bands are set to take area stages. Head out this weekend and enjoy some tunes before hordes of people arrive for next weekend’s Independence Day festivities.

Renowned local jazz guitarist and sought after sideman Andy Page will take a rare turn in the spotlight on Monday, June 29, when he headlines Blowing Rock’s Monday Night Concert Series. In addition to teaching at ASU, Page can be seen and heard performing with Todd Wright, Bafoodus, Swing Guitars and Melissa Reaves. Opening Monday’s show will be the trio of Amy Woodall, Amy Marie Young & Steve Sensenig.

6/26 The King Bees/Possum Jenkins
The Watauga Arts Council’s Concerts on the Lawn series will get a burst of electricity this Friday, June 26, as High Country blues veterans The King Bees team up with local alt. country outfit Possum Jenkins. Husband and wife duo Rob “Hound Dog” Baskerville and Penny “Queen Bee” Zamagni have traveled the world playing inspired blues and roots rock n’ roll together for more than 20 years. Formed in Boone in 2004, Possum Jenkins mixes country, blues, Southern rock and soul for a unique brand of Americana. The band has shared stages with Billy Joe Shaver, the North Mississippi Allstars and Shooter Jennings, among others.

This Friday, June 26, Music in the Valle will host award-winning local bluegrass band Surefire. Winners of last year’s inaugural HayesGrass competition in Blowing Rock, Surefire blends youthful energy with classic bluegrass sensibilities for a sound that is equal parts hot picking and solid harmony.

6/27 Amantha Mill
Popular High Country band Amantha Mill will return to Todd for this Saturday’s installment of the Todd Summer Concert Series. Amantha Mill is a popular regional band with many years of musicianship under the members’ collective belts. The band features singer, songwriter and bass player Becca Eggers-Gryder; resonator guitar and banjo player Randy Pasley; guitarist Billy Helms; and fiddler John Cockman, who is also a member of The Cockman Family band.
