High Country Biofuels Cooperative, Inc. (HCBC) will host a grand opening for its Biodiesel Distribution Station, located at 1372 Highway 194 in Boone, this Friday, July 3, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Interested citizens who are not yet members are invited to visit and learn about biodiesel, its production and use and its positive impact on the environment of the High Country. During the celebration, HCBC will accept new members. For existing members and new members there will be an information session on availability, fueling procedures and payment. Members will be able to fuel their diesel vehicles with B99 biodiesel at their convenience. The biodiesel fuel is vegetable oil based and will be selling for $3.25 per gallon.
HCBC is a membership cooperative located in Boone. Since late 2006, HCBC has provided its members with commercial biodiesel, initially pumping fuel from its 1,400-gallon fuel truck. HCBC members have been working diligently to make biodiesel more easily available to members and other interested citizens in the High Country. There have been considerable hurdles to surmount, but, at last, HCBC has completed a local distribution station where members of the cooperative can fuel their diesel vehicles with B99 biodiesel at their convenience. Because HCBC is a nonprofit cooperative registered under the state laws of North Carolina, anyone interested in using biodiesel or supporting the cause must become a member of the cooperative. HCBC has several membership plans in place ranging from individual/family memberships to small businesses to fleet memberships. Each membership is dependent on the amount of biodiesel fuel used on a regular basis. More information will be available at the grand opening.
The officers and board members of HCBC are very appreciative of the existing members who have continued to support the coop and its endeavors through some difficult times. With the opening of this distribution station, HCBC hopes to increase the interest of High Country citizens in membership in the cooperative, thereby increasing the use of biodiesel in the community that will ultimately lead to less pollution and higher quality air.
