Liz Aycock Resigns from Boone Town Council

On Tuesday, June 30, Boone Town Council member Liz Aycock resigned from the Boone Town Council.
“I am disappointed that I will have to resign my position on the Boone Town Council effective 06/30/09,” Aycock wrote in a letter to the mayor, council and Boone citizens. “My husband and I have purchased property that is located outside of the city limits.”
State law dictates that once a municipal office holder moves outside of the corporate limits of the town, that office holder’s seat is then considered to be vacant. Aycock said she was able to sell her house quicker than anticipated and was unable to find a temporary rental within the town limits.
“I regret not being able to serve the remainder of my term. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve you,” she said.
Aycock was elected to a two-year term on the council in a runoff election against incumbent Dempsey Wilcox in 2007. Her term was set to expire after the 2009 election. According to N.C. General Statutes § 160A-63, a vacancy on the town council shall be filled by an appointment made by the council, and the appointed council member shall serve the remainder of the unexpired term.
