High Country Book Fair Saturday and Sunday
Author Nora Percival published her first novel at age 88 and is about to publish her third at age 92. Percival and other authors will be available for sales and signings at the High Country Book Fair at the Boone Mall on Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and 12.
High Country Writers will sponsor the High Country Book Fair at the Boone Mall on Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Watauga Public Library.
Local authors who come from all parts of the country to find inspiration in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains will be on hand to sign their books at the mall. Regional authors such as Maggie Bishop—whose adventure mystery novel series revolves around the Appalachian Mountains, murder investigations and falling in love—will be sure to please avid mystery and romance readers.
Author William (Bill) Kaiser is a Civil War buff. His first novel, Blood Root, has become a smash hit. It is a story about the strife within families, the struggle for food and the newfound relationship between a transplanted Yankee and a poor mountain man.
Young adult author Judith Geary’s novel Getorix: The Eagle and the Bull, set in the pre-Roman Republic, offers the excitement of Harry Potter with some real Roman and Celtic history thrown in for believability. This book is aimed at middle school age readers to adults who are young at heart.
Jack Pyle and Taylor Reese have written individually and sometimes have co-authored together. Pyle’s pen looks behind the scenes of his native Appalachia, but his work is never confined to one place, one time or one theme. He writes mysteries, love stories, Civil War pieces and young adult fiction. Reese is a natural humorist, writing about real human beings in small town settings.
In his book, A Walk Atop America: Fifty State Summits and a Dream to Reach Them All, author Douglas Butler vividly describes the challenges he faced trying to reach each state’s highest point, difficulties that ranged from blizzards and forest fires to obtaining permission from private landowners and forest service managers.
Local author Nora Percival said, “My first book, Weather of the Heart, is about my childhood in Russia during the early days of the Bolshevik Revolution. It tells the story, through a child’s eyes, of how my family’s pleasant life was destroyed and how we all lived together and sustained each other through those difficult years before my parents and I were reunited in America.”
