With the start of Summer Sunday Concerts at Fred’s General Mercantile in Beech Mountain, this week represents the biggest week yet in free music in the High Country. After a crazy holiday weekend, pack a picnic, grab a blanket and head to the closest free concert!

7/9 The Neighbors
This week’s Concert in the Park will features The Neighbors. Consisting of Bob Henson on lead vocals and guitar, Gary Saunders on banjo and vocals, Rick Conway on bass and vocals and Rick Everhardt on mandolin, The Neighbors play traditional and modern bluegrass with a twist of rock and roll and comedy thrown in. The band recently performed at MerleFest 2009 and also provided music for a new outdoor drama at the Crossnore School called Miracle On The Mountain.

7/12 Joe Shannon and the Mountainhome All Stars
Joe Shannon will take a break from his weekly duties as head of the Mountain Home Music Series to help Fred’s General Mercantile kick off the Summer Sunday Concert Series on Beech Mountain with his band of hot pickers known as the Mountain Home All-Stars. Just head to the gazebo and enjoy some great bluegrass from some of the best local pickers around.

7/13 Jonathan Maness
This week’s Monday Night Concert in Blowing Rock features ASU grad and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Maness. A recent performer at MerleFest with the Dixie Beeliners, the Knoxville resident has played with the likes of Sam Bush, Doc Watson, David Holt, Riders in the Sky and Wayne Henderson. He now spends his time touring with the contemporary Christian country group Young Harmony, working on a record with his good friend Clint Alphin and finishing up the tracking of a progressive bluegrass solo project. Maness also performs with the Watkins Family and the band Mountain Soul.

7/10 Echo Park/Melissa Reaves
Local progressive rock band Echo Park has performed at the Jones House every year since Concerts on the Lawn began during the mid 1990s and this year will be no exception. The quintet’s sound blends elements of Brit rockers including Yes, Pink Floyd, The Who and many others. The band recently released their debut CD.
Opening Friday’s show will be acclaimed local singer-songwriter and guitarist Melissa Reaves. Whether belting blistering rock tunes, playing intricate, layered guitar pieces or strumming quiet ballads, Reaves is easily one of the High Country’s most important musical treasures.

7/10 Kent Doobrow & The Other Brothers
Kent Doobrow & The Other Brothers continue their High Country tour this Friday, July 10, as this week’s featured performer at Music in the Valle. The band cranks out classics from the likes of The Grateful Dead, Phish, Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, Warren Haynes, The Allman Brothers Band, Eric Clapton and many others. Doobrow is a graduate of ASU and Lees-McRae and has played the series each year since its inception.

Fresh from their performance at the Hayes Center’s Summer Blues Festival, Todd residents The King Bees will return to the stage just minutes from home when they play the Todd Summer Music Series this Saturday. From Paris and Rome, to New York and Washington, D.C., Penny “Queen Bee” Zamagni and Rob “Hound Dog” Baskerville have taken classic blues and roots rock around the world.
