The best-looking canines in the High Country will sashay across the lawn at Buckeye Recreation Center in Beech Mountain while vying for awards in the third annual BJ’s Dog Show this Saturday, July 18.
Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and the contest takes place from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Donna Cohen will emcee the dog show, which features award categories for large, medium and small in the pure bred division; large, medium and small in the mixed breed division; best trick; best bark; longest and shortest tail; and owner/dog look-alike.
“We have lots of trophies and gifts to give out,” said Peggy Coscia, office manager for the Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce. About 50 dogs have participated in the competition each of the past two years, Coscia said.
The advanced entry fee is $20 for one dog and $30 for two or more dogs. On the day of the event, the minimum entry fee is $30. The chamber will donate one-half of the proceeds to Friends for Life, a nonprofit organization that fosters and finds homes for dogs and cats at Animal Control. A Friends for Life representative will serve as one of the judges in the dog show.
Because the event is held outside, the show will move along swiftly and there will be kiddie pools with water for the dogs, Coscia said.
“We try to move it along because of the heat in the summertime,” she said.

Street Dance at Town Hall
Later in the day, the Beech Mountain Chamber will hold one of several street dances this summer at the Beech Mountain Town Hall. The free dance will take place from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
A beach sand surface will be provided, and DJ Mac Mast will play the music, including tunes for line dancing, children’s dances and more.
