July is filled with horse shows and riders enjoying the High Country’s picturesque scenery. The Carlton Gallery in Banner Elk will feature a special “Spirit of the Horse” exhibition during the second monthly Avery Tour de Art on Saturday, July 25.
The special showing of horses in the studio from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. will serve as a preview to the Mid-Summer Exhibition and Artist Reception on Sunday, July 26, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.
The energy and beauty of the horse is artistically displayed in oil paintings, mixed media collages and black and white photography. Each piece of equine art expresses the depth of passion and respect artists Vae Hamilton, Toni Carlton, Holly Glasscock, Jim Crompton and Jack Stoddart feel for the horse.
Horses have always been important to Hamilton, and her paintings of “Cloud” and “Irish” capture on canvas their personality and spirit. The oils on canvas by Glasscock beautifully capture her love of horses, including the soft gaze of a pair of horses in “Cautious Observation.”
The oil paintings of Crompton depicting the light and colors of the Southwestern desert are his tribute to the great open plains. From oils on canvas to mixed media collage, Carlton’s love of horses shows as she captures the “Spirit of the Horse.” “Mustang” and “Snowbelle” are pictured in a winter’s snow in Stoddart’s black and white silver gelatin photographs.
The Carlton Gallery is located 10 miles south of Boone and seven miles north of Linville on Highway 105 in the Grandfather Community. For information about gallery exhibitions, artists or workshops, call 828-963-4288 or click to www.carltonartgallery.com.
