SAHA and ASU Senior Scholars Host Local Garden Floral Walk July 21 to 23
From Tuesday through Thursday, July 21 through 23, the Southern Appalachian Historical Association and the ASU Senior Scholars Program will host the Local Garden Floral Walk, a three-day tour of gardens and native plants in Watauga County.
The Garden Walk is an educational experience meant to teach adults and youth about the diverse plants and flowers native to the region, including Lady Slippers, Rhododendrons and Mountain Laurel.
Garden Walk guide Derek Poindexter, director of the I.W. Carpenter Herbarium, will lead the groups and explain what plants are native and which are not, their medicinal purposes and what they were used for in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Participants will travel to different locations in the county to observe local plant life. Maps will be provided to each guest and the expedition will be led by the experienced guide to answer questions and explain material.
If it were to rain, Poindexter will have alternate plans for guests that will be discussed on the day of the rain at the previously designated meeting place. Group members are encouraged to dress comfortably and be prepared for light hiking. Participants must have their own transportation to locations.
To participate, the first trip will begin at the Hickory Ridge Homestead on the grounds of Horn in the West from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21. At the first meeting, there will be a book on local flora available for sale for an extra charge. The other two Garden Walk days will be discussed at the first meeting.
Fees are $70 per person and guests will be able to pay when they arrive at the first meeting. There are no tickets for the trip; participants can pre-purchase at the Horn in the West office and will be issued a receipt. There is a maximum of 20 spaces available for the walk, so guests are encouraged to arrive early.
