Ashe County Arts Council Hosts August Events
August heralds a lineup of events hosted by the Ashe County Arts Council, including: Ken Kolodner, nationally known hammered dulcimer musician; Sisters on a Journey, an art exhibit; a Gallery Crawl; Walking Across Egypt, a play presented by the Ashe County Little Theatre; and a concert featuring the Kruger Brothers. As summer winds down, why not spend some time with the arts of the High Country?
Saturday, August 8—Ken Kolodner
Considered to be one of the most accomplished hammered dulcimer musicians of our time, Kolodner has broadcasted concerts on NPR, All Things Considered, German National Radio, on the CBC, as well as the Voice of America. He has produced 10 instructional recordings and was a featured soloist on the Emmy-nominated CBS-TV Christmas special. The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Ashe Arts Center. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for students and are on sale now. Purchase tickets by calling the arts council at 336-846-2787.
Wednesday, August 12—Sisters on a Journey (opening night)
Three artists come together as friends and collaborators in art, featuring Beth Andrews, Tara Belk and Marsha Holmes. On Friday, August 14, the public is invited to attend the opening reception from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The exhibit runs through September 26 at the Ashe Arts Center.
Friday, August 14—Gallery Crawl
Downtown West Jefferson comes alive from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. for patrons of the arts, during the popular monthly Gallery Crawl. Participating businesses include Acorn Gallery, Ashe Arts Center, Ashe Custom Framing and Gallery, Broomfields, Originals Only Gallery, River Rock Gallery, R.T. Morgan Art Gallery and Glass by Camille, Smart Gallery, Spin A Yarn... Weave A Web and the Stephen Shoemaker Studio. The Crawl is free and open to the public. Thursday to Sunday, August 20 to 23—Walking Across Egypt
Ashe County Little Theatre presents an adaptation of the gritty, earthy novel of the same name, scribed by North Carolina’s own native son, Clyde Edgerton. The story is about Maggie Riggsbee, an elderly woman without a future, and the boy she meets, Wesley Benfield. Wesley is an orphan without a past, has walked away from a juvenile detention center and smack into the center of Maggie’s life. Find out what happens to the pair when their worlds collide. Thursday through Saturday shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinee starts at 2:00 p.m. with no evening performance on that day. Call 336-846-2787 for ticket information.
Saturday, August 29—The Kruger Brothers
Brothers Uwe and Jens Kruger from Switzerland, joined forces with Joel Landsberg after performing together for 20 years, to become known as the Kruger Brothers. Uwe plays guitar, Jens, the banjo and Joel is a bassist. Their famous virtuoso playing is vibrant, yet calming and is a music style that defies definition. A one night only performance at the Ashe Civic Center begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets go on sale July 29 and may be purchased by calling 336-846-2787.
