Carlton Gallery Mid-Summer Exhibition Opens Sunday
Charlotte Foust’s non-objective acrylic abstracts include this work, titled “Swirly Bird.” Image submittedCarlton Gallery opens its 27th Mid-Summer Exhibition with an artists’ reception on Sunday, July 26, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. “Color Your Life with Art” is the theme of the exhibition, and the gallery walls are hung with paintings in all media and styles. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served, and several represented artists will be present.
The focus of the Mid-Summer Exhibition are the bold and colorful abstract landscapes by Kate Worm and Andrew Braitman and non-objective abstracts by Charlotte Foust.
Worm sketches and paints on location, where she thrives on exploring abstract shapes in the landscape, particularly wooded interiors. Worm then interprets that experience onto a larger canvas in her studio. The process involved in her abstracts is lengthy because of the drying time of the thick oil paint. Many layers of paint are applied and sometimes removed to create a dark/light pattern using full, rich color.
A graduate of Michigan State University, Worm earned her MFA degree from Columbia Teachers College in New York City. She works extensively in arts education throughout the region.
Foust’s non-objective acrylic abstracts painted in warm, subtle tones, along with contrasting bold lines and shapes in brilliant colors, bring a contemporary air to Carlton Gallery for the Mid-Summer Exhibition. Foust’s collage series of birds and animals with human faces are a whimsical delight. Foust earned a bachelor’s degree in creative art from UNC-Charlotte and her works are in many private collections.
Braitman incorporates blue, green and turquoise with complementary colors to create breathtaking abstract landscapes. His shift from warm to cool colors within the landscape draw the viewer’s eye to the intimate detail that is his signature. Braitman’s paintings titled “Watauga at Hound’s Ear” and “On Howard Creek” showcase his talent in capturing the diversity and beauty of the High Country. His work has been featured throughout the U.S. and abroad.
The Mid-Summer Exhibition also contains the colorful impressionistic paintings of the late Jim Crompton. He was a longstanding artist of the gallery whose artistic talent and arts education enabled him to paint any subject matter, and the gallery workshops he taught influenced many local artists.
Colorful art by standing gallery artists will also be on exhibit, including oils on canvas by Egi Antonaccio, Roy Nichols, Jane Desonier, Helen Farson, Bill Farnsworth, Kevin Beck, Mary Dobbin, Eloise Pope, Warren Dennis and Martha Gimlin and mixed media by Vae Hamilton, Dina Lowery, Toni Carlton and Debbie Arnold.
The Carlton Gallery is located 10 miles south of Boone and seven miles north of Linville on Highway 105 in the Grandfather Community. For more information, call 828-963-4288 or click to www.carltonartgallery.com.
