Feature Photo—Brazil in Boone

A group of public administrators and public administration students from the Brazilian state of Ceará visited Boone and ASU last week and were honored with keys to the town at a special ceremony at the Boone Town Council meeting last Thursday, July 16. State congressman Francisco Caminha, who returned to Brazil before the ceremony, led the group. The remainder of the group stayed on to complete English classes and a workshop on comparative management. During their time in North Carolina, the group visited the legislature in Raleigh, met with the city manager and mayor of Winston-Salem, attended a planning commission meeting and the town council meeting in Boone, along with participating in several other activities. The ASU Walker College of Business is working to set up partnerships with Brazilian institutions in the state of Ceará in order to increase study abroad and international internship opportunities for its students. ASU is also looking into partnerships in Brazil in the area of public administration and renewable energy research. ASU recently received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to study methane recovery possibilities from sanitary landfills in Ceará and neighboring states in northeastern Brazil. ASU will offer its first Portuguese classes this fall. Photos by Sam Calhoun
