Free Sustainable Forestry Management Seminar July 29
Loggers and bark harvesters, forest landowners, building contractors, environmental organizations and others interested in sustainable forestry practices in western North Carolina are invited to a free day-long seminar called “Managed Forests Equal Sustainable Forests.”
Speakers include North Carolina and other regional experts on sustainable forestry practices, who will speak on how forest management training can translate into more local jobs in green building trades, increased tax credits and more sales from commercial forest lands. The seminar features a special emphasis on sustainable procurement of poplar bark, a forest salvage product with a long lifespan and low energy impact as exterior siding.
The classes and workshop take place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, at Mayland Community College, and have been approved for Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) Category 1 credits by the N.C. Division, Society of Foresters. Participants are asked to register by Friday, July 24, by clicking to www.barkhouse.com or by calling 828-765-7351, extension 249. Lunch is available for purchase.
Highland Craftsmen of Spruce Pine sponsors the seminar. The company, which manufactures poplar bark siding, has been a leader in creating jobs in the hard-hit construction industry, with as many as 700 trained foresters throughout the Appalachian region salvaging and re-processing the bark as part of commercial timber operations.
