Seasoned instructor Mary Greene will teach all skill levels of musicians how to play numerous songs on the Appalachian mountain dulcimer and the hammered dulcimer on two Saturdays in August at Horn in the West’s Hickory Ridge Homestead in Boone.

Greene, who has taught music for 30 years, will offer a workshop on the Appalachian mountain dulcimer on Saturday, August 1, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Horn; and a workshop on the hammered dulcimer on Saturday, August 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Horn. Each class is for ages 12 and up and costs $30 per person.

Attendees to the August 1 mountain dulcimer workshop will learn how to tune, play simple chords, incorporate rhythmic strumming and play a few traditional Appalachian folk songs. Available online resources will be presented. Participants can bring their own dulcimer or borrow one. Participants need to indicate when registering if they need to borrow an instrument.

During the August 8 hammered dulcimer workshop, attendees will develop an understanding of how to play simple melodies and traditional songs on the instrument by using a multi-key method that utilizes the “do-re-mi” system of moveable scales, making the instrument more accessible for the beginner. Greene will work-by-ear as much as possible but printed material will also be available. A selection of simple, familiar folk melodies, Celtic and Appalachian tunes and traditional hymns will form the class’s repertoire. Basic hammering technique, tuning tips and additional online resources will also be covered. Students must have their own hammered dulcimer and be willing to share with another student.

All proceeds from the workshop will be donated to ongoing projects at the Hickory Ridge Homestead Museum.

For more information and/or to register, call Greene at 828-262-5995.
