3rd Annual Playhouse Family Music Fest Slated for August 7 and 8

Festival Features Live Music, Dancing, a Parade and more

Following the release of two acclaimed children’s albums, Charleston-based Sol Driven Train will headline the Playhouse Family Music Festival in Sugar Grove on August 7 and 8. lkjasdf

The 3rd annual Playhouse Family Music Festival will be held from 5:30 to 11:00 p.m. Friday, August 7, and from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8 at the Historic Cove Creek School in Sugar Grove.

This year’s festival will kick off with a contra dance on Friday evening featuring the music of Dot-Dot-Dash, the Forget-Me-Nots, Lost Ridge Band and Lisa Baldwin & Dave Haney.

A family-oriented contra dance will begin in the gym at the Historic Cove Creek School at 7:30 p.m., followed by a “Grown-Ups Dance” at 9:00 p.m. led by Asheville-based caller Diane Silver. An experienced caller, Silver is well suited for a night that will encompass dances for kids to grown-ups and from novices to experts. “She has a rare skill of bringing together dancers of all ages and all levels of experience into one big fun experience for everyone—without overly challenging the less experienced and without ho-humming the highly experienced” said Asheville parent and dancer Elana Kann.

On Saturday, festivalgoers will enjoy the sounds of nationally touring band Sol Driven Train, who bring a quirky combination of strings, horns and inventive lyrics to the stage. The group’s two discs for kids, Tajar Tracks and Tajar Tracks Two have been critically acclaimed, the first voted Best Children's Album of 2005 in South Carolina. But the band has ample grown up fans as well; Atlanta’s Creative Loafing praised their “languid world-beat, swampy funk and downright catchy melodies.”

Inflatables will be just one of many attractions at the Playhouse Family Music Festival. Other activities include a contra dance, parade and lots of live, interactive musical performances.

In addition to music, festivalgoers will enjoy inflatables and a giant slide, art activities, face painting, water play, and kids’ craft market, plus food and high quality crafts vendors.

A highlight of Saturday’s activities is sure to be a giant puppet parade staged by the award-winning Elkland Art Center. Elkland staff will lead an art workshop at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. At 4:15 p.m., festivalgoers will be invited to carry their new artwork or choose from more than 100 handmade works of parade art, including giant woodland animals and fanciful costumes and join in the parade led by festival headliners Sol Driven Train.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by clicking to www.goplayhouse.org. Ticket prices are as follows: Two-day adult passes are $25, two-day child passes are $10. Saturday-only adult tickets are $18 and Saturday-only kids’ tickets are $6. Friday-only adult tickets are $10 and Friday-only kids’ tickets are $4. Contra-only adult tickets are $8. Children under 24 months enter free of charge.

The Playhouse Café will be open throughout the festival and will offer barbeque, pizza, veggie wraps, beef and veggie burgers and more. The café is sponsored by Boone Mall with support from Earth Fare, Bandanas, Mellow Mushroom, Harris Teeter, Ingles and Food Lion.

Elkland Art Center’s Cindy Ball poses with a puppet at last year’s festival. Ball will help children create their own parade pieces on Saturday before the parade at 4:15 p.m.

Do you have a crafty kid or budding young entrepreneur who’d like to branch out from the ho-hum lemonade stand? Kids are invited sell their work in the Kids’ Craft Market at the Playhouse Family Music Festival, held on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Kids are advised to bring their artwork, a blanket, a sign and/or price tags and a change purse. All items must be kid-made and priced under $5.

Presented by ExploreBooneArea.com, the Playhouse Music Festival is sponsored in part by the pediatric dentistry and orthodontic practice of Drs. Mayhew, Scheffler, Hardaway, and Conn, Boone Mall, Green Mother Goods and the Harmony Center for Women’s Health and Vitality.

For more information, click to www.goPlayhouse.org or call 828-263-0011. All proceeds benefit The Children’s Playhouse, a nonprofit children’s museum based in Boone.
