Heritage Day at Moses Cone Manor August 8
Parkway rangers join in the fun of sack racing with children at Heritage Day, held annually at the Moses Cone Manor on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Heritage Day takes place on Saturday, August 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.The National Park Service and the Southern Highland Craft Guild invite you to Heritage Day on Saturday, August 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Moses Cone Manor in Blowing Rock. Admission is free.
Heritage Day is the largest annual event held at the Cone Manor, the historic mansion of textile entrepreneur Moses H. Cone and home of the Parkway Craft Center.
A number of artisans will be on hand to demonstrate old-fashioned crafts. Leniavell Trivette will exhibit fiber arts and heritage toys, including sock monkeys. Tom Turner will present the art of wood carving to visitors, and Lyle Wheeler will work with wood and old-fashioned toys as well. Beth Kelley Zorbanos will work using natural materials; included in her crafts will be corn shuck dolls. Apple cider making will also take place.
Performers include Steve and Ruth Smith on dulcimer and guitar, potter and storyteller Glenn Bolick, folk dancers and other musicians.
Children and park rangers will play games such as bobbing for apples, three-legged racing, sack racing and hop scotch. Rangers will also lead short walks at the Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, and visitors can tour the upstairs rooms of the Cone Manor.
