St. Mary’s Choir To Perform in Valle Crucis Sunday
The third concert of the 2009 series at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Valle Crucis features the Choir of St. Mary of the Hill’s Parish in Blowing Rock. The concert takes place Sunday, August 2, at 5:00 p.m.
Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Valle Crucis, which oversees events at St. John’s Church, is pleased to sponsor the 2009 Music at St. John’s series. Each concert of the series begins at 5:00 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month.
The Choir of St. Mary of the Hills has a deep commitment to the great music of the Anglican tradition, which has led the choir on numerous trips to study with the foremost directors of choral music in Cambridge, England, including George Guest at St. John’s College, Stephen Cleobury at King’s College and Tim Brown at Clare College. Twice featured as choir-in-residence at Durham Cathedral in England, the choir was chosen to represent the state of North Carolina at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
Jacquelyn Bartlett, a Boone resident, performer and professor of harp at ASU, UNC-Greensboro and N.C. School of the Arts, serves as artistic director of the series.
“This beautiful and exciting program by the Choir of St. Mary of the Hills, conducted by the talented James Baumgardner, will feature music chosen from the great repertoire sung at St. Mary’s throughout the year,” Bartlett said. Following a sort of Introit (Silent Devotion), the concert order roughly follows the outline of the church year, highlighting three particular seasons: Advent and Christmas, Lent through Ascension and the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A group of secular pieces taken from St. Mary’s semi-annual Madrigal Feast, ‘The Revels of Winter’, will end the program.
Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for students and free for kids under 12. Those attending are encouraged to bring a picnic to enjoy on the church grounds following the concert.
