Roots music duo Clearwater Connection is comprised of Bill Hansen and Doris Sotirellis. With a repertoire of more than 200 songs spanning many decades, artists and genres, the duo defines their music as “contemporary-retro Americana.” Wonderful harmonies are supported by tastefully arranged acoustic instrumentation, achieving a pure, unplugged sound. With their easygoing stage presence and humorous bantering, a warm rapport is instantly established with their audience. Standing ovations and repeat performances have attested to the quality of Clearwater Connection concerts.

8/2 The Watauga Community Band

With members ranging in age from teens to octogenarians, the Watauga Community Band is an all-volunteer concert band composed of members of the local community and students from ASU who share a love of making music. The band will perform this Sunday, August 2, at Fred’s General Mercantile in Beech Mountain.

In addition to rehearsing weekly, the band play concerts throughout the year, including a recent performance during the town of Boone’s 4th of July celebration. The band plays an eclectic variety of music, including standards, patriotic selections and much more.

Husband and wife duo Steve & Ruth Smith will bring their signature brand of “Celtic Appalachian music” to the Jones House this Friday, July 31.

7/31 Steve & Ruth Smith/Deeper Roots

For more than 30 years, the husband and wife team of Steve and Ruth Smith have used the hammered dulcimer, guitar and banjo to explore the delicate and wistful sounds of the style they call Celtic Appalachian music. From the Blue Ridge to the Far East, the couple has mesmerized audiences with songs that recall their Scots-Irish heritage while creating new songs that expand on the traditions.

Led by Rick Brockner, Concerts on the Lawn veterans Deeper Roots features Wilkes County pickers Rich Gaughan and Jerry Lankford. The band writes and performs modern string band music about life in the North Carolina Mountains.

Bluegrass duo Tommy & Patty Calahan will take the stage for this week’s installment of Music in the Valle. Hailing from Marion, Va., the duo has performed in the area before at Mast General Store and recently released a CD of their original music.
