David Birmingham Social at Art Cellar Saturday

Watercolor Workshop, ‘Paint Out’ Also Planned for August

“Golden Pond,” an oil painting on linen by artist David Birmingham. Meet Birmingham at an art social at The Art Cellar in Banner Elk on Saturday, August 8, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

A diverse summer of art continues at The Art Cellar Gallery in Banner Elk during the month of August. On Saturday, August 8, the gallery will present a Saturday Art Social from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. with renowned painter David Birmingham. Birmingham’s oil paintings capture mountain landscapes with rich classical realism. His work captures the beauty of Blue Ridge Mountain vistas, back roads and walks through the woods or along the river.

David Birmingham was born in England and studied and traveled around the world. He later taught at the Miami Art Institute for 25 years. During that time, he began visiting and painting in the Western North Carolina mountains. Having fallen in love with the area, he now maintains a studio in the mountains for seven months of the year along with his studio in Florida.

Anne Abgott Watercolor Workshop—August 17
The next special event at The Art Cellar Gallery will be a watercolor workshop with award winning watercolorist Anne Abgott. The enthusiastic interest in Abgott’s artwork and techniques inspired The Art Cellar to host a workshop in the gallery for the first time. The one-day watercolor workshop will be held at The Art Cellar Gallery on Monday, August 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The workshop will focus Abgott’s watercolor techniques featured in her bestselling book Daring Color, and the subject for this workshop is “Daylilies in Silver.” An image is provided to participants ahead of time so they can prepare their image before the class and use the class time to focus on mastering the watercolor techniques. Call or visit The Art Cellar Gallery to register and pick up the image and supply packet. The cost of the workshop is $100, and it is open to all experience levels but limited to 22 participants.

Plein Air ‘Paint Out’—August 22
Another new event for The Art Cellar Gallery will be a Plein Air “Paint Out” held on Saturday, August 22, and cosponsored with the Avery Arts Council. This daylong event will feature regional painters both amateur and professional painting outdoors from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. along the path from the Avery Arts Council Cheese House Gallery to the back garden of The Art Cellar. Painters and art lovers can walk along the trail and the galleries and watch the artist at work.

The Art Cellar Gallery will exhibit the work of its Plein Air painters during the event and will host a reception with the artists from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. to share the artists’ results from their day of painting. Painters interested in participating can contact The Art Cellar or the Avery Arts Council at 828-898-4292 for more information.

August 22 is also the Avery Tour de Art day. The Art Cellar Gallery is one of 12 participating art venues in this monthly self-guided art tour. Maps for the tour are available at each location. The tour is held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the fourth Saturday of each month through October.

The Art Cellar Gallery is located on Highway 184 in Banner Elk. For more information, call 828-898-5175 or click to www.artcellaronline.com.
