Green Park Inn Bid Rejected by Owner, Online Sale Closes August 7
Although auctioneers tried to start the Green Park Inn bidding at $5 million on Thursday, July 30, the highest bid only reached $825,000, which included the 10 percent buyer’s premium.
Owner Ronnie Wrenn rejected the bid, and the online auction continues until 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 7, at which time the sale should be finalized, said Bracky Rogers, sales manager, auctioneer and founder of Rogers Realty.
The online auction, which began simultaneously on July 30, is currently up to a bid of $1.2 million.
The inn has been shown about 12 times to people from all over since the live auction closed, Rogers said. Bidders are probably waiting until the last day or plan to bid through the office, he said. “That’s what happens.”
The historic 1882 Green Park Inn has been host to prominent guests—including Herbert Hoover, Eleanor Roosevelt, Margaret Mitchell, Calvin Coolidge, John D. Rockefeller and Annie Oakley—and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It is located on the Eastern Continental Divide, 3,620 feet above sea level on the border of Watauga and Caldwell counties. The Blowing Rock Country Club and Golf Course borders the inn’s property to one side and North Carolina’s oldest travel attraction since 1933, The Blowing Rock, sits across the street.
The Victorian-era inn is situated on about three acres has 86 guest rooms, a quaint dining room called “Divide Tavern” and accommodations for meetings, conferences, weddings, parties or other social and cultural events. The vintage furniture and the original ceiling fans in the guest rooms are part of the deal, Rogers said.
Potential bidders are required to register and deposit $50,000 in certified funds with the remainder of a 10 percent good faith deposit by personal or corporate check. The balance is due at closing. A 10 percent buyer’s premium will be added to the contract price and the inn sells “as is.”
“It’s been very active inquiries,” Rogers said. “I think we’re going to get it done. It looks very promising.”
