Traditions remain alive because young people take up the ways of older folks. So it is, too, in the world of folk music. Fads fade away, but not traditions. This week’s Mountain Home Music concert, “Keepers of the Flame,” is a first-of-its-kind concert for the series and will feature up-and-coming young musicians and their teachers on Saturday, August 8, at 8:00 p.m. at the Blowing Rock School auditorium.
The teachers, Steve Lewis and Scott Freeman, have been Mountain Home Music regulars since it started in 1994. Lewis is a former national banjo champion and MerleFest guitar champion, and two years ago, Freeman picked up first place in mandolin at the Wayne Henderson Festival.
In addition to performing, Steve Lewis and Scott Freeman also teach aspiring future musicians. Lewis teaches a folk music class at Ashe County High School, and he also gives lessons at Blue Moon Guitars in West Jefferson. At the high school, students bring acoustic guitars, electric guitars, banjos, mandolins and almost anything else with strings to class, and he patiently teaches, supports and encourages his students. At Blue Moon Guitars, he teaches private lessons on guitar and banjo.
Freeman lives and teaches in Woodlawn, Va., a small community near Galax, home of the world’s oldest and largest fiddle convention. Even though his specialties are mandolin and fiddle, Freeman also teaches guitar, banjo and bass fiddle.
Student musicians appearing at “Keepers of the Flame” will include banjo, fiddle and mandolin players.
Tickets are $12.50 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets for college and high school students are $10 at the door only. Tickets can be purchased at Mast Stores, Rydell Music Center, Pandora’s Mailbox in Blowing Rock and Fred’s Mercantile on Beech Mountain. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.MountainHomeMusic.com.
The purpose of Mountain Home Music is to honor the music and musicians of the Appalachian region. It is affiliated with the Blue Ridge Music Trails, a project of the North Carolina Arts Council.
