Multiple Watauga County Blood Drives This Month
According to the American Red Cross website, “the current blood supply has dropped critically low throughout the Southeast.” To combat the critical numbers, the Watauga Chapter of the Red Cross is organizing several opportunities to donate blood this month.
“For every pint of blood you donate you truly have the potential to save three lives,” said Lynn Norwood, a representative of the Watauga County Chapter of Red Cross. The most urgently needed blood types are O negative, the universal donor, as well as A negative and B negative.
The drives started this week and continue this Saturday, August 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church (email graceboone@gmail.com to make an appointment); on Friday, August 21, from 1:30 to 6:00 p.m. at both Wal-Mart, 828-262-0254, and Boone Mall, 828-264-7286; and on Thursday, August 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Caldwell Community College, 828-297-2185.
“We do blood drives where we can get organizations that let us use their facilities,” said Norwood. Usually, these facilities also staff the drives, but both the Boone Mall and Wal-Mart locations need volunteers to help out. To fill that need, call 828-264-8226.
If you’re interested in donating blood, Norwood advises staying hydrated for at least a day or two before giving, and that women in particular should eat iron rich foods for about a week prior to donating.
