Power of the Purpose

Ten High Country Women’s Fund POP Parties Scheduled in Coming Months

The group of women that make up the High Country Women’s Fund (HCWF) feel that now is the time for change in the local community. The mission of the nonprofit organization is to affect positive change for women and their families in Avery and Watauga counties. It helps women moving toward self-sufficiency by connecting them with local resources and with other caring women in the community.

High Country Women’s Fund is greatly known for their annual luncheon, Power of the Purse. This event has been held the past three years and has been the major fundraiser for the group. Last year alone, they distributed more than $80,000 in local communities. This year the fund has decided to do an “about face” when it comes to raising funds and awareness in the High Country.

“As good stewards of the funds that are donated to our cause, we feel that all our energy and resources should go directly to the women that we serve. In this economic climate, if we are feeling the crunch even slightly, I can’t imagine what some of those in our community are going through,” said Lindsay Miller, HCWF coordinator.

This year, in lieu of an annual luncheon, High Country Women’s Fund has made the difficult decision to focus the power of the purse to more economic friendly gatherings, called Power of the Purse Parties. “In the last two years, POP parties have been an important part of our efforts to build awareness of the ways we help women in our community,” said Kim Kincaid, HCWF Advisory Council chair. “They are now just a bigger part of our strategy.”

POP parties are designed to create an inviting atmosphere in someone’s home to inform and educate on the ways others can have a positive impact in the local community. People are invited to come learn about High Country Women’s Fund and ask any questions they might have.

“We have successfully held POP parties in the past and already have 10 scheduled from now through October,” said Rebecca Moore, membership chair of HCWF. “We know that to help more women, we will need to inform and engage more members, and POP Parties are a great way to grow our group—in a truly grassroots way.”
