Blowing Rock’s Concert in the Park series, now in its 22nd season, brings unique musical styles to town for free concerts in downtown Memorial Park. Two concerts are scheduled in August.
On Saturday, August 8, at 6:00 p.m., the soothing brass sounds of the Triangle Tuba Quartet (TTQ) will fill the air. The TTQ consists of two euphoniums and two tubas, played by the foursome of Joe Lowman, Irv Eisen, Jack Denniston and Paul Gramann. The TTQ have performed together since 1998 and have a repertoire that ranges from Bach to American jazz.
“This is a unique addition to the series,” said coordinator Stephanie Keener. “We’re thrilled to have them make their Concert in the Park debut this month.”
On Sunday, August 16, the series will feature the return of the ever-popular Pipes and Drums of the Grandfather Highland Band at 4:00 p.m. This is a change from the originally published date of August 9. Founded in 1974 by Agnes MacRae Morton and Harvey Ritch, the band has more than 30 members from four states. The host band of the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in Linville, the Highlanders wear the MacRae tartan in honor of Morton. The Highlanders have been the Southern Pipe Band champions for three years in a row and have held this distinction many times since they first captured the championship in 1976. Gordon Warburton is the band’s pipe major, with Raymond Swinton serving as drum major. The Highlanders attract a large crowd to the park for its annual performance. The Highlanders have performed in Blowing Rock every year and are only one of two bands to do so.
The Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce, Bob Hess, CPA and private citizens sponsor the Concert in the Park series. For more information, call the Blowing Rock Chamber at 828-295-7851.
