Avery YO! Afterschool Parent Registration Thursday
Avery Youth Opportunities will hold registration for afterschool programs this, Thursday, August 13, at the Cooperative Extension Office in Newland, located at 805 Cranberry Street, from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Guardians will need to bring a copy of the student’s shot record, a current photo and the name and number of their medical doctor.
The elementary school YO! programs will formally begin on Monday, August 17. The middle school YO! programs will begin on Monday September 8. Avery YO! will have sites at Newland Elementary, Riverside Elementary, Crossnore Elementary, Banner Elk Elementary, Freedom Trail Elementary, Avery Middle and Cranberry Middle.
Avery YO! will operate from the time that school lets out until 6:00 p.m. Elementary school sites will operate Monday through Friday; middle school sites will operate Monday through Thursday.
The price for attending Avery YO! at the elementary school sites is $11 per day. There is a sliding scale fee offered through the N.C. Department of Social Services. Parents in need of funding assistance for elementary aged afterschool students can call Amy Trivette at 828-733-8230.
At this point, Avery YO! will offer the program to middle school students at no cost. However, this is subject to change dependent on funding notification.
Avery YO! is committed to providing all encompassing services to students. Participants receive academic support, participate in cultural enrichment and development activities, learn experientially and take field trips. Additionally, they participate in Survivor: The Ultimate Afterschool Experience, where they learn to leave an active and healthy lifestyle.
Last year, activities included an Art Club, Youth Expanded Food Nutrition Education Program, Spanish Club, Survivor, the 5th Dimension, Gear-Up, Media Ready, Career Smarts and field trips to area attractions.
