Concert on the Lawn at Jones House Friday
Lisa Baldwin and Dave Haney, Buck and Nelson Perform This Week
Lisa Baldwin and Dave Haney are one of the two duets performing at this Friday’s Concerts on the Lawn at the Jones House in downtown Boone.
This week’s installment of the Watauga Arts Council’s Concerts on the Lawn series features bluegrass and folk duets with Lisa Baldwin and Dave Haney and Buck and Nelson. As always, the free concert begins at 5:00 p.m. on the lawn of the Jones House in downtown Boone on Friday, August 14.
Lisa Baldwin and Dave Haney play from an acoustic repertoire that includes Baldwin’s original songs, bluegrass, country, traditional folk and the work of contemporary singer-songwriters. Their debut CD, Where We Belong, was released in February 1998 and re-issued in 2004 by Rackettown Music and has received considerable airplay on acoustic-oriented stations throughout the U.S. and in Europe.
Baldwin was raised in Huntsville, Ala., in a family with strong roots in country and gospel music. She plays guitar and keyboard, sings lead and harmony and writes the duo’s original material. Since 1995, Baldwin has taken her educational children’s music program, “Learning Through Song,” to child development centers, libraries, schools, community programs and festivals.
Haney grew up near Minneapolis, Minn., where he began to perform folk material in coffee houses in his late teens. For 15 years, he played in bluegrass bands in the Northeast. Haney plays guitar, mandolin and harmonica and sings lead and harmony.
Buck and Nelson are David Buchanan and Nelson Thomas. The duo has performed together since the mid-1970s. Their main instrument is the acoustic guitar, which they play with a flatpick and fingerstyle, but they also incorporate the mandolin, fiddle, old-time banjo, bluegrass banjo, harmonica and washboard.
Often referred to as mountain music or roots music, Buck and Nelson’s performances feature traditional songs and tunes, folk music, bluegrass (or “Crabgrass,” as they like to refer to their version), blues and some original songs and tunes as well as some covers.
Panera Bread is the sponsor of this Friday’s Concerts on the Lawn performance. Season sponsors are the Downtown Boone Development Association, Alpine Storage and Mast General Store.
The Concerts on the Lawn season will continue every Friday through September 18. Upcoming concerts will feature singer-songwriters, bluegrass, old-time, barbershop quartets and fiddle tunes. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket.
