Elk Creek Valley Day in Triplett Saturday
Several authors will sign their works at Elk Creek Valley Day on Saturday, August 15, including William F. Kaiser, author of Bloodroot. At the base of a series of switchbacks snaking down the steep eastern decline of the Blue Ridge is the rural community of Triplett, located in the Elk Creek valley. The community invites the public to Elk Creek Valley Day on Saturday, August 15, at Powder Horn Mountain from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The free event will include a community yard sale, arts and crafts show, a cookout, an authors’ book signing and a community social. Profits from the event and additional donations will be used for two cemeteries and the Stewart Simmons Fire Station community center.
“The purpose, basically, is to raise some funds for the maintenance of the two community cemeteries and the community building program that we have at the fire department,” said Bill Kaiser, who is helping to coordinate the event. “It’s the community taking care of the community members.”
Powder Horn residents will provide a hotdog or hamburger, potato chips, dessert and a beverage for $5 a serving. The community pool will be open with a lifeguard on duty, and a picnic area will be located outside.
Local High Country authors will have their works available for purchase and signing. June Bare will present and discuss her inspirational novel All Things. Maggie Bishop will display and discuss her adventure, romance and mystery novels, including her latest Perfect for Framing. Mountain storyteller Orville Hicks will spin his yarns and display books and CDs of his mountain tales. Kaiser will be on hand to discuss events in the North Carolina mountains during the Civil War and autograph his historic novel Bloodroot.
To get to Powder Horn Mountain from the Boone area, travel about 3.5 miles south on Highway 421 from the intersection with the Highway 105 Extension. Turn right onto Old Highway 421 and follow it for about 1.7 miles. Turn right on Elk Creek Road and follow it six miles to the Powder Horn guardhouse on the right.
The festival will take place rain or shine. For more information, call 828-264-2072.
