The Banner Elk Greenway
The Banner Elk Greenway is a project of the Town of Banner Elk using funds from local occupancy taxes. The new Greenway extends from an existing three-quarter-mile path at Tate-Evans Park in Banner Elk.
The new 1.5-mile section begins at the entrance to the town by the fire station, follows a staircase up to the top of a ridge, continues across the ridge on an elevated boardwalk and arrives at the old Cheese House building, where the Avery Arts Council is housed. From there, the trail continues on a boardwalk across the mill pond, travels by the Lees-McRae College athletic field, crosses the Elk River and finishes near the edge of the college property.
Town Manager John Mejaski said work on the project began in fall 2008, with the majority completed in spring 2009. The Greenway should be completely finished in about a week, he said.
The town is currently in discussion about which direction to extend the Greenway in the future, said Mejaski. The Village of Sugar Mountain is also building a greenway, he said, and the two towns hope to connect the paths in the future.
