Wee Care Benefit for Child Protective Services August 19
Mountain Friends, an organization for newcomers to the High Country, will host a Wee Care Benefit on Wednesday, August 19, at the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock. Proceeds will benefit the Protective Services to Children program of the Watauga County Department of Social Services (DSS).
The event features a luncheon, silent auction and craft and bake sale from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Twin Valley Jazz Trio will provide the music.
The fundraiser is the first in several years for Mountain Friends, formerly known as High Country Newcomers. The club held a successful fundraiser for the new children’s wing at Watauga Medical Center about five years ago, said Joy Stokes, president of Mountain Friends.
“We do lean towards the children,” Stokes said.
Among the silent auction items available for bidding are jewelry, a log cabin rental, original paintings, rounds of golf and stone delivered from Vulcan Materials. The craft sale will feature original and Christmas-themed creations by Mountain Friends members.
Reservations to the luncheon served by the Meadowbrook Inn are $25 per person. Persons wishing to attend the craft and bake sales and silent auction only may do so without making a reservation, Stokes said.
Protective Services to Children is a DSS program that investigates reports of suspected child abuse and neglect. The agency attempts to correct abusive or neglectful situations using methods ranging from counseling, daycare or other services to the family to removing children from their homes through court action.
Mountain Friends holds frequent get-togethers for its members, including lunches and dinners, book discussions, bridge and other social events.
Only cash or checks will be accepted at the fundraiser. For tickets, contact Helen Fabry at 828-295-3271. For more information about the fundraiser or Mountain Friends, contact Stokes at 828-295-9521.
