Free Symposium on Daniel Boone at ASU September 4

Daniel Boone Days Event Features Authors Robert Morgan, Randell Jones

Award-winning authors Robert Morgan and Randell Jones host the 2nd annual Dr. Edwin Arnold Daniel Boone Symposium at ASU on Friday, September 4. Promoters announced this week that the symposium is now free.

In an effort to attract a wider audience to the academic portion of the 2nd annual Daniel Boone Days Music & Culture Festival, promoters announced this week that the Dr. Edwin Arnold Daniel Boone Symposium is now completely free. The symposium features award-winning authors Robert Morgan and Randell Jones and takes place on Friday, September 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in room 1018 of ASU’s Raley Hall. Seating is first-come, first-served. The Downtown Boone Development Association (DBDA) and North Carolina Humanities Council sponsor the symposium.

Symposium attendees will enjoy presentations on the history and significance of Daniel Boone from Morgan—author of the Oprah’s Book Club selection Gap Creek and New York Times bestseller Boone: A Biography—and Jones, author of In The Footsteps of Daniel Boone. The two accomplished historians will provide the audience with many unknown facts about the American pioneer and pinpoint his contributions to the local area, state, nation and world.

The symposium begins at 10:00 a.m. with opening remarks from host organizations, and Jones takes to the podium at 10:10 a.m. After Jones concludes his presentation at 11:00 a.m., Morgan will take over until 12:30 p.m., and then the symposium will recess for a 1.5-hour lunch break in downtown Boone.

Attendees will receive downtown walking maps from the DBDA that include information on restaurant discounts and information from Jones for an historical scavenger hunt. Jones has researched all sorts of connections to Daniel Boone, some of which are hidden right before your eyes in downtown Boone. Jones’ hunt will show that even in the quaint mountain town of Boone traces of the famous pioneer can still be found in the present day.

At 2:00 p.m., the symposium will reconvene at the same location in Raley Hall for a question-and-answer panel for one hour, where Morgan and Jones will take questions on Daniel Boone from the audience. Before taking any questions from the audience, though, Jones will show participants a PowerPoint presentation regarding answers to his scavenger hunt.
