Friends of the Library Sponsor Annual Mini-Sale August 27 to 29

Customers peruse books for sale at the big February book sale, sponsored by Friends of the Library. The August Mini-Sale, while smaller in scale, still offers the same quality of merchandise and the wide variety of books that make the sales so popular. Photo submitted

The annual August Mini-Sale, sponsored by Friends of the Library, will be held at the Watauga County Public Library this Thursday to Saturday, August 27 to 29. The sale will run from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday and from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Most paperbacks will sell for 50 cents, and most hardbacks cost $1.

Additionally, a highlight of this year’s sale is an eclectic collection of old books—some rare—that will be available at bargain prices.

“We have a person who sells older, rare books on eBay for us; these are books he didn’t get listed on eBay,” said Claire Olander, president of Friends of the Library.

Along with the library sale price, each book will be accompanied by a note informing customers of the price range in which the same book would sell on eBay, she said.

“[This] will be a real opportunity for folks interested in old books and especially rare books,” Olander said, adding that a couple hundred of these books will be for sale, many with historical significance.

Other categories of books available at the sale include hardback and paperback fiction, biographies, politics, psychology, health and medical topics, philosophy, religion, crafts, gardening, art, regional interest and coffee table books, Olander said.

“We have lots of cookbooks [and] we also have quite a few children’s books,” she added.

All the books have been donated by community members, and the Friends accept donations year round for their two annual sales. Donations of magazines, encyclopedias or large sets of books, however, are not accepted.

“We have folks who sort the books when they come in into the categories,” Olander said. “We select out books [and] especially for the August sale, we try to put out a nice selection.”

The August Mini-Sale offers about 2,000 to 3,000 books, while the big sale in February displays around 10,000 books, Olander said.

All proceeds from the book sales benefit the library.

“We sponsor many programs at the library,” Olander said. The Friends sponsor the library collections, staff development and they help purchase materials and sometimes equipment for the library, she added.

“We sponsor many of the summer reading programs that have been going on this summer and are very well attended,” Olander said.
