When a few comic book dealers put out sports cards at a show during the spring, Scott Nicholson got a new idea.
“People were interested in the cards,” Nicholson said.
So he’s opted to host the High Country Sports Show, where sports cards, memorabilia and collectibles will be available.
The show, which is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, at the Boone National Guard Armory, will be a chance for collectors and new fans to purchase items.
“This is about building a community event,” Nicholson said. “I want to see parents doing something with their kids and having that generational connection.”
Multiple generations of cards will be on sale, something that Nicholson sees as a big draw for the show. Older cards are big with collectors and are sometimes used as investments.
More than that, though, is that Nicholson hopes to introduce new collectors, and even children, to sports cards.
To do that, the $2 admission charge will include a free pack of cards. Door prizes will also be available, including autographed cards by former ASU wide receiver Dexter Jackson, who is currently on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster.
There will be a large variety of prices at the show, also.
“It’s experimental, just to see if it will work in Boone,” Nicholson said.
While baseball cards may be the most known sports cards, Nicholson said that all sports, including NASCAR, will be represented.
Nicholson has attended shows in Hickory and Asheville to talk with dealers about selling at his show. He said he hopes to have 25 to 30 vendors.
“Part of the goal,” Nicholson said, “is to see people who used to collect, dust off their collections and come to the show.”
Local radio stations WECR-102.3 FM, WMMY 106.1 FM, WKSK-580 AM and WATA-1450 AM will be giving away autographed cards and other items of memorabilia. Listen this week for more information on how to win these prizes.
