All the party animals in town will gather on the night of Saturday, August 29, in honor of their furry friends. The 12th annual Fur Ball, a benefit for the Watauga Humane Society, takes place at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center in Boone from 6:00 to 11:30 p.m.
The annual event is the Watauga Humane Society’s largest fundraiser, raising about $72,000 last year for the nonprofit organization.
“Every penny of the profit goes to the housing and the care of the animals at the shelter,” said Jan Watson, a Humane Society board member who is co-chairing the Fur Ball along with Peggy Jessee.
The evening begins with a “Yappy Hour” reception from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and a silent auction from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The “Kibbles ‘n Bits” dinner and live auction takes place from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., followed by “Purring and Barking”—music and dancing—from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. The Fabulous Kays, a band out of Charlotte, will entertain ball attendees.
One of the packages available for auction is one-week stay in an apartment in historic Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. Artist Elizabeth McAfee will auction off one of her paintings and sell her cards.
Tickets are $100 per person or $1,000 for a table for ten. Tickets are available by calling Watson at 828-264-1743. Tickets must be purchased no later than Tuesday, August 25. The event is typically a sellout.
The Watauga Humane Society formed in 1969 and is celebrating 40 years of service this year. The organization’s mission is threefold: the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of animal suffering and the extension of humane education. Proceeds from the Fur Ball help fund the Watauga Humane Society Animal Shelter, the dog park, spay and neuter services, microchip clinics and educational activities.
