“It will be their first solo appearance at the Ashe Civic Center in a number of years,” said Jane Lonon, executive director of the Ashe County Arts Council.
“They’ve got quite a following and quite a reputation,” Lonon said. “They’re such an engaging group of performers. Their connection with the audience makes it a very special performance for everyone.”
According to www.krugerbrothers.com, Jens and Uwe Kruger were born and raised in Switzerland and they have been performing professionally since 1973. After playing for 20 years throughout Europe in various styles and venues, with Uwe on guitar and Jens on banjo, the brothers invited bassist Joel Landsberg to join them.
The three musicians known as the Kruger Brothers are now based out of Wilkes County and perform internationally, as well as being MerleFest staples, said Lonon. Sometimes a fourth performer joins them, but this show will feature the trio, she added.
“Our popularity over here in America was such that it caused us to move over here because here was where the market was and here was where we found the types of people who really enjoy the music that we make," Landsberg, the group's bassist and manager, said, as quoted on the website.
For those who have never heard “good bluegrass,” the Kruger Brothers provide the ideal educational experience, Lonon said. “They’re dynamite.”
The Ashe County Arts Council sponsors the performance as part of its performing arts series.
“We have a diverse and eclectic series of opportunities for folks right here in Ashe County, both at the Ashe Civic Center and Ashe Arts Center venues.” Lonon said. “We have about two performances a month.”
This year’s lineup of 24 events from July 2009 to June 2010 encompasses professional, high-quality theatre, comedy and music performances, Lonon said, adding that music performances range from traditional and bluegrass to chamber ensembles.
Tickets to the Kruger Brothers performance are $12 for adults and $5 for students.
“I encourage people to call ahead and get seating,” Lonon said, because she expects the 300-seat auditorium to sell out.
