The Naked Light/Tallest Trees at Dragonfly Friday
The Naked Light/Tallest Trees will perform at Dragonfly Theater at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21. The show costs $5 for those 21 and up and $7 for ages 18 to 20.
The four-piece band based out of Nashville, Tenn., is essentially two alter-egos—playing two distinct types of music, said band member James Wallace.
He and Kai Welch represent The Naked Light and the other two band members, Dabney Morris and Thomas Samuel, represent Tallest Trees.
“When we play in Nashville, we play as one band or [the other],” Wallace said.
The Friday performance, however, will feature both sides of the coin, musically speaking.
Friday’s set will begin with Tallest Trees, Wallace said, adding that Tallest Trees performs experimental electronic pop music.
Halfway through the performance, the bandmates will switch and play The Naked Light’s brand of rock and roll, with instruments producing more straightforward sounds, he said.
While two members lead their particular style of music, the other two members play backup, he said.
Throughout the performance, the four band members will rotate between keyboard, guitar, drums and bass, “switching things up almost every song,” Wallace said.
The Art Society will open for the group, and the night also features a performance by the local group Doc Aquatic.
The Boone performance is the penultimate stop on The Naked Light/Tallest Trees’ tour, titled “A Summer of Trouble,” with the last performance scheduled in Asheville. The tour encompassed stops in the Midwest, three shows in Canada, then performances in New York City, Philadelphia, Penn., and Richmond, Va., among other cities.
The tour was given its name “to be funny,” Wallace said, but the group has actually encountered real setbacks along the way.
“One band member suffered some serious identity theft from his girlfriend, and we were screwed over by a PR campaign,” he said. “We’ve experienced a lot of trouble on this tour, but we’re going to work it out in Boone and Asheville. Everything’s going to be okay.”
Wallace and Morris attended ASU and are looking forward to playing in Boone. They can only travel to the area about once a year, Wallace said.
According to www.humantrees.com, The Naked Light has performed in Iceland, England, Australia, China and Canada. The band has shared the stage with artists such as Bobby Bare Jr., The Dresden Dolls, The Slackers and more. The group is promoting The Naked Light’s newest CD, I smile all day I smile all night, which was co-engineered and mastered at The Blue Room in Nashville, Tenn., by Charles Yingling (Willie Nelson). Tallest Trees is touring in support of its forthcoming, yet untitled album.
