Want to Get Published? Library Youth Lit Magazine Is For You!

Calling all High Country Youth with a creative mindset: Have you ever wanted to get published? Finished that painting that’s so avant-garde it’ll make people say “Picasso Who?” Written that life-altering short story that you slaved over for weeks and will probably change the world if only you could find the right outlet for your genius? Then get ready for the Watauga County Public Library’s new literary magazine!

All joking aside, the Youth Services Staff at the Watauga Public Library are pulling together the resources for a new literary magazine geared towards displaying the creative efforts of all you in the High Country who are age 18 and under. They’re now accepting submissions of poetry, short stories, essays, artwork and photography for their yet-to-be-named magazine. Simply send an email with an attachment of your work to ogray@arlibrary.org. Include your name, age, grade and contact information. The youth services staff also requests that, along with your work, you send in a suggestion for what the magazine will be called.

“The magazine is really youth-driven,” said Youth Services employee Kristen Street. “We tried to come up with a name on our own and then thought who better to name it then the kids themselves?”

Street also noted that the magazine was in conjunction with the recent writing contest held in April at the library.

“We had a great turnout for that and most of the pieces entered in the contest will be published in the magazine. But we still hope to see more work sent in. This is something that’s not been done in the High Country before, and we are excited about there being a creative outlet for the youth of the area. Not many people under the age of 18 can say they’ve been published,” Street said.

All written submissions to the magazine should be 2,000 words or less. Artwork and Photography can be sent in .jpeg format. All submissions are due by October 31.
