Why Do I Live in a Watershed and How Can I Help Keep It Clean?
Volunteer To Help Clean Up Rivers During Watauga BigSweep September 12
If you live on planet earth you live in a watershed. A watershed is the land that drains into a water body such as a river, stream, lake or ocean. We who live in Watauga County are lucky to be at the headwaters of four major watersheds, the Watauga, New, Catawba, and Yadkin river basins. Since we live in the mountains and we know that gravity works, all of our streams flow down the mountain and into larger river systems. For example, the Watauga River flows west into Tennessee and converges with the Holston River, which flows into the Tennessee River and eventually makes its way to the Mississippi River. So how we treat our water in the High Country affects many people and wildlife down stream.
Volunteers are needed for the Watauga and New River BigSweep on Saturday, September 12. The Watauga BigSweep and New River BigSweep are part of North Carolina BigSweep, a statewide coordinated clean up.
