Mountain Home Music is gearing up for its annual Labor Day Celebration, a concert that honors the workers of this region, past and present. Since 1998, Mountain Home Music has produced this special celebration on the Sunday night that precedes Labor Day.
This year’s concert will be Sunday, September 6, at 8:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in downtown Boone.
“Our community, like all communities, didn’t just evolve; it became what it is because of the hard work of others,” said Joe Shannon, founder and host of Mountain Home Music. “Our foundation was laid by farmers and factory workers, miners and millers, railroaders and lumberjacks, and many, many others. Though story and song we will honor those who have built, and are building, our community.”
The music will be provided by The Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys, which includes David Johnson, a member of the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame; Steve Lewis, a former National Banjo Champion and MerleFest Guitar Champion; Scott Freeman, a Henderson Festival Mandolin Champion; and Josh Scott, a highly sought-after bass player. In addition to bluegrass, this group plays blues, jazz, gospel, Celtic, country and even classical music. The Mountain Home Music Bluegrass Boys only play together for Mountain Home Music concerts.
Joe Shannon will narrate and tell stories about workers and their work.
Tickets are $12.50 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets for college and high school students are $10 at the door only. Tickets can be purchased at Mast Stores, Rydell Music Center, Pandora’s Mailbox in Blowing Rock and Fred’s Mercantile on Beech Mountain. The purpose of Mountain Home Music is to honor the music and musicians of the Appalachian region. It is affiliated with the Blue Ridge Music Trails, a project of the North Carolina Arts Council. Since it started in 1994, Mountain Home Music has provided a stage for three National Folklife Award winners, seven North Carolina Folk Heritage Award winners, three members of the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame and more than 1,000 local and regional performers. Select concerts have been broadcast over local and public radio and regional television. Prior to Mountain Home Music, there existed no ongoing public series in this region that focused on local and regional traditional performers.
